Hebrew
Learn Hebrew in a supportive and fun environment through conversation, reading, writing and more. Ulpan Ben Yehuda conversational Hebrew and prayerbook Hebrew are offered in small classes, in both daytime and evening, from the very beginner (Aleph level) to the most advanced (Vav level).

Israel Lecture Series and Forums

Archaeology Lecture Series
The Archaeology Lecture Series features outstanding lectures presented by leading educators from institutions including Tel Aviv University, The Hebrew University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, George Mason University and Emory University.   • "Recent Findings at Beit Shemesh and in History as an Iron Age Border City"
    Tuesday, September 28, 8 p.m.
    World-renowned archaeologist Professor Zvi Lederman of Tel Aviv University will speak on his most recent findings. The ancient site of Beit Shemesh was originally named after the Canaanite sun goddess Shemesh, and is mentioned notably in Chapter 6 of I Samuel as being the first city encountered by the Ark of the Covenant on its way back from Philistia after having been captured by the Philistines in battle.

  • "Recent Controversies Concerning the Dead Sea Scrolls"
    Sunday, October 3, 2 p.m.
    Mr. Herschel Shanks, founder of the Biblical Archaeology Society, which sponsors the annual Bible & Archaeology Fest, and the editor of the Biblical Archaeology Review.
    $7 lecture fee/$5 for Revitz House and Ring House residents, and students

Lunch and Learn Bible Series
Co-sponsored with the Foundation for Jewish Studies (FJS). Each of the Lunch and Learn study groups devotes weekly sessions to a specific book of the Bible or a topic that runs through more than one book. Classes are led by local rabbis and scholars. Bring a Bible and a brown bag dairy or pareve lunch. We supply coffee and tea. Classes are held at the JCCGW. Yiddish Programming
JCCGW Yiddish programs are supported in part by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. They are co-sponsored by Yiddish or Greater Washington and the Workmen’s Circle. The JCC offers beginning and continuing Yiddish language classes introducing students to spoken and written Yiddish using dialogues, songs, oral exercises, proverbs and video clips. For more information, contact Debbie Sokobin at 301-348-3760 or dsokobin@jccgw.org.
  • Yiddish Language
    Thursdays, October 7-December 23, 7:30-8:45 p.m.
    This course incorporates spoken and written Yiddish using dialogue, songs, oral exercises, proverbs, and video clips to build basic speaking and listening skills. The Yiddish alefbeyz is reviewed and a textbook will be available for purchase. Instructor Lee Goldberg has been teaching Yiddish for more than ten years.

Interfaith
The JCC is a welcoming environment for mixed-faith couples and families. We provide resources to individuals, couples and families exploring what it means to be part of a Jewish community. Personal support, ongoing interaction and a nonjudgmental approach allow individuals with non-Jewish backgrounds and others embracing Judaism to feel welcome.
