Part of the JCCGW's mission is to connect the people of our Jewish community with Israel. Since Rockville is about 5,000+ miles from Jerusalam, Roni Reingold, our community shlicha (Israeli emissary), has created this great resource to bring you a little closer to Israel.

Meet Our New Shlicha • Roni Reingold
|
The JCCGW welcomes Roni Reingold, our new shlicha (Israeli emissary), and invites you
to learn a little about her.
Please tell us about your family. I was born on February 13, 1989 in Be’er-sheva,Israel. My father Amit is the executive directorof Be’er-sheva municipality. My mother Liorais a high school literature teacher. My sisterChen is 25, and my brother Gilad is 16.
What is your educational and military experience? In high school, my favorite subjects were
English, chemistry, Israel history and geography, areas of study which made me love my country. Ever since, I have been excited to teach others about it. Also during high school, I was a counselor for the Israeli Scouts. For the year after high school and before entering the army, I volunteered and participated in a leadership program at Sade-Boker, a village in the Negev. In the army, I was a guider and then commander of the Survivor, Evasion and Escape Department in Unit 669 (Airborne Rescue and Evacuation Unit).
What did you do after release from the army?
I became a tour guide in Israel. And for the six months prior to coming to the JCCGW, I was a counselor for Australian teens during their gap-year program in Israel, which helped me understand the importance of promoting a strong Jewish connection.
Why did you choose to be a shlicha, and how do you feel about being posted at the JCCGW? Being a shlicha gives me the chance to share my knowledge and love of Israel, as well as tolearn about the Greater Washington Jewishcommunity. This is an amazing opportunity to be in a placewhere so much happens, from politics toculture to history. The wonderful JCCGW hasa lot to offer and has welcomed me in such alovely way.
Would you like our readers to know anything else?
I look forward to educating JCCGW staff, members and guests about Israel. Please feel free to stop by my office [located in the art hallway between studios A and B] or contact me at 301-348-3863 or rreingold@jccgw.org.

Stories of Taste • Recipes and Stories from Beit Shemesh
|
A Special Gift to the Kass Judaic Library from our Sister City, Beit Shemesh
Stories of Taste: Recipes and Stories from the Residents of Beit Shemesh
An innovative, intergenerational project with teens and seniors from Beit Shemesh resulted in a wonderful exchange of experiences shared through the art of cooking. The teens learned to cook traditional recipes while listening to the life stories of their 'more mature' counterparts. The result is a unique cookbook written in Hebrew entitled Stories of Taste: Recipes and Stories from the Residents of Beit Shemesh.
Every month we will feature a new recipe from book. This month, the featured recipe is Balls of Fish. Enjoy!

In early September, fifty youngsters from the Greater Washington area arrived in Beit Shemesh as part of the Partnership2Gether’s Birthright mission program. There, the group was greeted by locals from Beit Shemesh and Mateh Yehuda and visitors from South Africa.
Each year, Partnership2Gether hosts 5-6 missions. The activities are always performed on a voluntary basis. This time, the mission chose to volunteer at the Maccabi soccer school. The soccer school incorporates children from Beit Shemesh and Mateh Yehud, from rural areas, moshavim and kibbutzim. It highlights values and professionalism, and offers a unique family-like spirit. The children participate in a large number of tournaments during the course of the year.
Following a short opening address, the enthusiastic children, dressed in their yellow uniforms, and the members of the mission split up into teams and trained on the Kibbutz Tzora soccer pitch. After the games, which were played in a good spirit despite the intense heat, the main activity began: joint voluntary work on improving the area of the pitch. The idea was to plant grass instead of the traditional trees. Some painted gates, some laid grass and some put up a new fence so that the soccer balls don’t fly out of the pitch.
The members of the Birthright mission said that this kind of encounter, for them, turns Israel into something tangible and that it was an experience they will remember for a long time.

About P2G
For the past 15 years the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the JCCGW have connected the Greater Washington community with the region of Mateh Yehuda – Beit Shemesh in Israel. This has taken the form of delegations, school twinning and joint initiatives in women’s empowerment, ecological issues and coexistence. All this is implemented through the Partnership2Gether (P2G) platform of the Jewish Agency for Israel. |

| Hiking down the Shvil Yisra’el • Yardenit |
The Israel National Trail, Shvil Yisra’el, is a hiking path that crosses the entire country of Israel. Its northern end is at Dan, near the Lebanese border and it extends to Eilat at the southernmost tip of Israel on the Red Sea, a length of approximately 580 miles. The trail is marked with three stripes – white, blue and orange – and takes an average of 45 days to complete.
Every month we will visit a different part of the Shvil Yisra’el and learn about more places in Israel! I look forward to sharing the moments and experiences that were special to me as we take this journey.
This month we stop at the" Yardeni"t. Last month we stopped at Nahal Amud. From there to Yardenit we will take the Israel trail true mount Arbel , Kinneret (sea of Galilee) and Tiberius all the way down until we will arrive to”Yardenit”
Yardenit, also known as the Yardenit Baptismal Site, is a baptism site located along the Jordan River in the Galilee region of northern Israel, which is frequented by Christian pilgrims. The site is located south of the river's outlet from the Sea of Galilee, near Kibbutz Kvutzat Kinneret, which owns and manages the site.
According to Christian tradition, the baptism of Jesus (Matthew, 3: 13-17) actually took place in Qasr el Yahud, north of the Dead Sea and east of Jericho. For centuries, Qasr al Yahud was the most important baptism site for pilgrims, and monasteries and guest houses were established near it. After the Six-Day War Qasr el Yahud became a frontier area, located on the border between the state of Israel and Jordan. As a result, the Israeli Ministry of Tourism decided to establish this site in 1981 as a replacement site. As a result, "Yardenit" became the only regulated baptism site on the Israeli side of the river, until the reopening of Qasr el Yahud site in 2011.
